FBW A380x - How to Use CPDLC/ACARS

The FlyByWire A380x is a remarkable new addition to Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020. Even in its alpha state, the aircraft offers fantastic flight dynamics and immersion. However, one key component is missing for users craving realistic communication with Air Traffic Control (ATC): CPDLC (Controller Pilot Data Link Communications) and ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System). Without these tools, pilots have limited options for direct text-based communication with ATC.

Enter Flight Sim Messenger (FSM), a web-based tool that brings CPDLC and ACARS functionality to any aircraft, including the FlyByWire A380x. Compatible with both SayIntentions.AI and Hoppie ACARS networks, FSM enables pilots to engage in realistic ATC communications, enhancing the A380 experience in ways the current model lacks.

Why Use Flight Sim Messenger with the A380x?

  • Direct ATC Communication: With FSM, you can submit requests to ATC, like altitude changes or re-routing, and receive clearances through a CPDLC interface, all without native support in the A380x.

  • Versatility Across Simulators: FSM works with any aircraft and on any simulator, providing broad compatibility and flexibility.

  • Integrated SimBrief Flight Plans: FSM can pull in your SimBrief flight plan, simplifying the process of sending departure information to ATC.

  • Realistic Clearance and Routing: Request pre-departure clearance, route adjustments for weather, and more, just like real-world pilots.

Here’s a quick walkthrough:

  1. Prepare Your SimBrief Plan: Load it in FSM and add any remaining details like ATIS information and stand number.

  2. Submit for Clearance: Request pre-departure clearance, acknowledge with a simple “Wilco,” and you’re ready to go.

  3. In-Flight Adjustments: Use CPDLC to request altitude changes or route deviations due to weather, making your virtual flights more realistic.

FSM fills the gap for the FlyByWire A380x, enabling pilots to practice authentic ATC communications without built-in CPDLC or ACARS features.

Using CPDLC with SayIntentions.AI:

SayIntentions.AI is proud to be the only non-human ATC network with full CPDLC support. Here’s a breakdown of how to get the most from CPDLC with SayIntentions.AI and enhance your virtual flying experience.

Setting Up

To start, you’ll need your SayIntentions.AI ACARS Key from the Pilot Portal. This key allows you to connect with the SayIntentions.AI network. Once you have it, you’re ready to choose the best setup method for your needs.

Four Ways to Use CPDLC

  1. Option A (Recommended): Use Flight Sim Messenger (FSM), a web-based ACARS app. FSM provides full Pre-Departure Clearance (PDC) and CPDLC functions and works with both SayIntentions.AI and VATSIM. Easy to set up and accessible from any device, FSM is a highly versatile choice.

  2. Option B: Fly an aircraft with built-in ACARS/CPDLC systems compatible with SayIntentions.AI, like the Fenix A320, Leonardo Maddog MD-80, or Horizon Simulations 787.

  3. Option C: Use other third-party add-ons that act as ACARS clients and support CPDLC, giving you additional flexibility.

  4. Option D: Try Dave Black’s ACARS Bridge. This app connects any aircraft with a functioning CPDLC system to the SayIntentions.AI network by bridging Hoppie network traffic to SayIntentions.

Important Tips

  • Pre-Departure Clearance (PDC): Available without logging into CPDLC, but make sure your SimBrief username is entered in SayIntentions.AI settings.

  • LOGON to CPDLC: Before using other CPDLC functions, log into the network. Don’t forget to LOGOFF once you’re finished.

  • CPDLC Usage Limitations: Keep radio contact with ATC, as CPDLC won’t handle urgent messages.

  • Altitude Requirements: CPDLC is used for non-urgent messages only above 14,500 ft (ICAO) or 18,000 ft (U.S.). You can send requests (climb, descent, etc.) and receive routine messages from ATC.

  • Facility Handoffs: When switching ARTCC facilities, a “CONTACT CPDLC” message will guide you to the new frequency, after which you’ll use standard voice procedures to make contact.

With these tools and guidance, you can leverage CPDLC for a more authentic and immersive ATC experience with SayIntentions.AI.
